A Toast to Tradition: Celebrating Oktoberfest Märzen

There are few beer styles that capture the spirit of autumn quite like a traditional German Oktoberfest Märzen. Rich, amber-colored, smooth, and wonderfully malty, Märzen is a beer built for celebration—and in the coming weeks, Cooley Bay Winery & Brewery will be bringing our own interpretation of this classic style to the taps.

To appreciate Märzen, however, it helps to understand where it came from.

From March to Oktoberfest

The word Märzen translates simply to “March,” referring to when this beer was traditionally brewed. (For the sake of transparency, we brewed ours in May) Before modern refrigeration, German brewing was heavily influenced by the seasons. March was essentially the end of the traditional brewing season, and stronger beers brewed during that month could be stored in cool caves and cellars throughout the warmer months. When autumn arrived, the beer was ready to drink.

The Oktoberfest itself began in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese. What began with a royal wedding and horse race became an annual Munich celebration—and eventually one of the world’s most famous festivals.

The amber Märzen became closely associated with Oktoberfest, particularly after an amber lager was served at the festival beginning in 1872. That tradition continued for more than a century before Munich’s official festival beer shifted toward the lighter, golden Festbier in 1990.

That distinction is worth mentioning because when many Americans hear “Oktoberfest,” they picture the darker amber beer that has become a beloved autumn tradition here. What we’re describing is specifically the traditional Märzen interpretation rather than the modern Munich Festbier.

What Makes a Märzen Special?

Märzen isn’t a beer that needs to shout to get your attention.

Its beauty comes from balance and depth. Traditionally, the style showcases German malts—often including Vienna and Munich malt—with a rich, bready and lightly toasted character. The color ranges from deep golden-amber to reddish copper, with brilliant clarity and a persistent off-white head.

The first sip may give you an impression of gentle malt sweetness, but a properly made Märzen finishes clean and moderately dry. Moderate bitterness keeps the malt from becoming heavy or cloying, while the lager fermentation provides the crisp, exceptionally clean character that makes the beer so easy to enjoy.

In other words, Märzen is simultaneously rich and refreshing.

It’s the sort of beer that rewards taking your time with it. Notice the bread crust, the toast, the subtle malt complexity, the clean fermentation, and the way the bitterness keeps everything balanced. Then take another sip.

And perhaps another.

More Than Just a Beer

Of course, Oktoberfest has always been about more than what’s in the glass.

At its heart, the tradition is about community. People gather around tables, share food, raise their glasses, listen to music, tell stories, laugh with friends, and sometimes leave having made new ones. The beer is an important part of that experience—but it is also a vehicle for bringing people together.

That spirit is something we value deeply at Cooley Bay Winery & Brewery.

As a local winery and brewery, we have the privilege of watching our community come together around a shared appreciation for craft beverages. Every pint poured represents more than malt, hops, water, and yeast. It represents William’s passion when he brewed it, the wonderful Cooley Bay staff who serve it, and most importantly, the people who choose to gather together and enjoy it.

Supporting a local brewery means supporting a place where neighbors meet, friendships develop, celebrations happen, and memories are made. Your support allows us to continue expanding, introduce new beers, and contributing to the community that makes Cooley Bay possible.

Prost!

As autumn approaches, we invite you to join us for a glass of our upcoming Oktoberfest Märzen. Whether you’re a longtime fan of German lagers or you’ve never experienced a traditional Märzen, we hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate what is in your glass—and the centuries of brewing tradition behind it.

Come raise a glass with us, bring your friends, meet your neighbors, and celebrate the season.

Because ultimately, that’s what great beer is meant to do.

It brings people together.

Prost! 🍻
